Rashtra Nirmata Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar said about civilization that, “Civilization as comprising and accumulated store of
knowledge of man and nature, of arts and crafts, an ethical code regulating the conduct of man towards his fellows, a social code laying
down the forms and conventions to be observed by individuals, a civil code prescribing the rights and duties of the rulers and the ruled
and a religious creed relating the natural to the supernatural is a rare prize. It has not been the good fortune of all races to develop it in all
its fullness.”

Dr. BHIMRAO AMBEDKAR

1891 – 1956
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, born Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on April 14, 1891, was a towering figure in India’s modern history. He was a multi-faceted individual—a jurist, economist, social reformer, and politician—who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of the underprivileged and marginalized.
Key Contributions and Legacy:
Architect of the Indian Constitution: Dr. Ambedkar is widely regarded as the chief architect of the Constitution of India. As the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, he played a crucial role in shaping a document that enshrined principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. He was instrumental in including provisions for social justice, fundamental rights, and a system of reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Social Reformer and Champion of Dalit Rights: Born into a Mahar (Dalit) family, Ambedkar experienced the harsh realities of untouchability and caste discrimination from a young age. He became a relentless crusader against social injustice, advocating for the upliftment of the “untouchables” and working to dismantle the rigid caste system. He led movements for the right of Dalits to access public places, including water sources and temples.
First Law Minister of Independent India: After India gained independence in 1947, he was appointed the country’s first Law and Justice Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.
Economist and Scholar: Dr. Ambedkar was a highly educated individual, earning doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics. His academic work, particularly his book “The Problem of the Rupee,” is said to have influenced the creation of the Reserve Bank of India.
Advocate for Women’s Rights: He was a strong advocate for gender equality and played a significant role in drafting the Hindu Code Bill, which aimed to reform Hindu personal laws related to marriage, divorce, and inheritance.
Conversion to Buddhism: In 1956, a few months before his death, he converted to Buddhism, inspiring a mass conversion among his followers as a protest against the caste system.
Dr. Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1990. His legacy continues to inspire social and political movements in India and around the world, and he is revered as a symbol of equality and justice.
